Da Ji, Lady Kayō, Queen Bao Si of the Zhou Dynasty, the brilliant and beautiful Mikuzume -- all identities taken on by an incredibly powerful creature, the nine-tailed fox known as Tamamo no Mae. Born more than 3,000 years ago in Ancient China, Tamamo terrorized the eastern world with her bottomless well of magical power, endless font of knowledge, and unmatched skill in manipulating humans. According to legend, her reign of chaos ended when Emperor Toba's samurai found her in Nasuno and killed her, the fox's corpse becoming an inert stone containing Tamamo's evil spirit within. Supposedly, years later, a Buddhist monk came across the stone which killed any living thing that came near it, and was told of what had caused this. He performed a memorial service over the stone, and when it was done, Tamamo's spirit appeared before him, repented each and every one of her sins, then disappeared to never be seen again. (On March 5, 2022, the actual stone -- still there in Nasuno, Japan -- split in half, likely due to water erosion seeping through existing cracks in the rock.)
